China made an immediate impact on their naval pentathlon debut at the 7th CISM Military World Games as they dominated the medal table on the first day of naval pentathlon at Mulan Lake.

Home athletes occupied all three podium places in the women’s competition courtesy of ZHANG Na (2,441pts), LI Shun (2,390) and XIE Ronghua (2,386) with defending champion Cecilia SJOEHOLM (SWE) in fourth after the obstacle race and individual lifesaving.

In the men's, Matthias WESEMANN (GER), the 2015 gold medalist, is in third after two events behind YE Rentang (2,412) and Brazil’s Lincoln TIAGO who is just one point ahead of the German with 2,401.

It was a disappointing end to the day for China’s YANG Jin though. He stormed home in 1min 43.1secs to surge to the head of the obstacle race rankings only to be awarded a 20-second penalty following a mistake. That saw him slide from first to 14th and he ended the day in 19th.

There was frustration also for Denmark’s Christian LUND whose Games campaign is over after he aggravated a left shoulder injury during the obstacle race. His withdrawal is also a blow for his team who will miss his prowess in the amphibious cross-country.
