The English Stylebook for the 7th CISM World Games was officially issued before the one-year countdown to the event. The Stylebook is compiled to help in correct English expression in Games-related documents and communication during the event. On September 26, the Stylebook was first used at a training course held by the Executive Commission for nearly 70 translators working in the 39 Competition Committees.
English is the official language of the Games. According to the IRD, the opening/closing ceremonies, news conferences and other official activities will be held in both Chinese and English. The Stylebook will offer guidance for thousands of people serving the Games, including 200 translators as well as the preparatory staff and volunteers.
It is learnt that the Executive Commission had set up a translation center and an expert committee for linguistics to coordinate and guide linguistic services for the Games.
The Stylebook covers the elements of terminology, names and titles, sports and venues, language and grammar, punctuation, date, time, number and currency, mechanics of writing, and business correspondence. It sets forth the official translations of China’s military ranks, landmarks and renowned scenic spots in Wuhan, as well as the written form of date.
