Nanchang August 1st Memorial Hall, where the former Jiangxi Grand Hotel stood, has a look of solemnity and serenity. 92 years ago, the general headquarters for Nanchang Uprising based here commanded the uprising force and embarked on armed resistance countering anti-communist purges by Kuomintang. Today, this place witnessed another historic moment: the holy torch for the 7th CISM Military World Games (7th CWG) was lit here.

When the first ray of sunlight cast into the memorial hall, the tranquility here was disturbed by the forceful footsteps of 8 honor guards. 9 flag-bearers who respectively guarded the national flag, military flag and CISM flag, strode vigorously past the sculptures of “heroes of the time” and entered the site to light the holy torch.

Sculptures of “heroes of the time” include five leaders for Nanchang Uprising: ZHOU Enlai, HE Long, YE Ting, ZHU De and LIU Bocheng. They commanded the uprising and initiated a new era in which the Communist Party of China independently led revolutionary war and created the people’s army with a common aspiration of “seeking happiness for Chinese people and rejuvenation for Chinese nation”.

Today, the national flag, military flag and CISM flag were presented before them as three historical coordinates. August 1st of 1927 marked the birth of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA); on October 1st, 1949, the Five-Starred Red Flag symbolizing the establishment of People’s Republic of China was raised at Tian’anmen Square; in Spring of 1978, PLA became a member of CISM as an army of power, civilization and peace on the international stage of military sports competition. These three historical nodes witnessed the development and historical undertakings of PLA.

At about 7:00 a.m., the holy torch lighting ceremony began. FANG Minglu, envoy for lighting the holy torch, walked towards the site under the escort of three female soldiers.

Born in Nanchang, FANG Minglu is the great-granddaughter of proletarian revolutionist and militarist FANG Zhimin and is now pursuing master’s degree at Peking University. Since her childhood, FANG Minglu has been told the story about her great-grandpa. As she stepped into the site to light the holy torch, the outlook of “abundant creativities and progresses” described by FANG Zhimin in his article titled “Lovely China” is displayed around her.

FANG Minglu stopped before the sculptures of “Nanchang Uprising” and stared at the revolutionary martyrs: a commander shouted and charged forward while brandishing his gun; a soldier called his comrades following him while waving the battle flag; another soldier took a barn lantern to light up the road ahead. A gun, a flag and a barn lantern express the eternal purpose, nature and original aspiration of PLA and enable the young people today to identify their mission.

In the site of former Jiangxi Grand Hotel, FANG Minglu walked slowly towards the torch lighting brazier. The torch in her hand was lit and began flaming brightly. The barn lantern lit up the road for seeking liberation of Chinese while the torch of the 7th CWG lights up the journey of Chinese military to “Share Friendship and Promote Peace”.

Escorted by 2 armed police, FANG Minglu with the newly lit torch in her hand walked towards the direction of sunrise. The spark in the past lit up the current journey while the holy torch lit today carries the expectation of future peace. Starting from Nanchang, the torch will be relayed in cities, countryside and military camps, showing the world Chinese military’s keen anticipation of “Military Glory, World Peace”.
