The touring exhibition "Xu Beihong and His Time" premiered at the Hubei Museum of Art on Jan. 24.

Artwork by Sun Zongwei

Launched by the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), the exhibition honors the 100th anniversary of its founding and showcases over 200 exhibits from the CAFA Art Museum. Many of them are on display in Hubei for the first time.

The exhibition covers a variety of media including traditional Chinese paintings, oil paintings, sculptures, printmaking, and watercolors. Among the exhibits are 61 precious works by 33 celebrated modern Chinese artists, including Xu Beihong, Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, and Li Keran.

Some of these artists were Xu's close friends, and others were artists whom he had deeply influenced. There are also a number of documentaries on display that record the wide range of social and cultural activities in which Xu was engaged.

Xu was the first dean of CAFA. He was also a pioneer and founder of the 20th century Chinese fine arts. The exhibition "Xu Beihong and His Time," supported by the 2018 Communication and Exchange Promotion Project of China National Arts Fund, has previously toured four major domestic museums.

The free exhibition will continue through March 10.
